Caverns of Sonora RV Park
When the kids and I had to fly back last minute to AZ for school testing, I felt terribly guilty cancelling reservations at Carlsbad Caverns. Caverns of Sonora vindicated my decision.
This spot was halfway between El Paso and Austin - so we only stayed one night. No reservation needed. In fact - there’s always space.
While I feel the cave tour was a bit overpriced, it was extremely informative and intimate. The camp grounds are stellar (only $25 per night); peacocks roaming free, beautiful tree coverage, and super friendly hosts “Oh honey, if you arrive late, just park. We’ll see you in the morning.” Good ole TX hospitality.

In the area:
Caverns of Sonora - FYI - absolutely NO bags, NO backpacks, NO purses. I couldn’t even rock (pun intended) my SmarterGarter. Ugh. This is a privately owned cave, and they take the preservation extremely serious.
HAD I KNOWN:
Make your kids pee BEFORE the hour tour. ;)
