Boothill RV Resort

Had we not had friends stationed at the Air Force base, I can honestly say I had no desire to visit Alamogordo. I’m glad we did!

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Day Trip Ideas:

    • CLOUDCROFT: Just 30 minutes up the mountain, Cloudcroft is an adorable ski community. Blink and you’ll miss it. Cute boutique shops, a beautiful lodge and a hand full of locally owned restaurants. The cooler weather due to higher altitude is a welcome break from the Alamogordo heat. Drive slow, deer all over the place. Cloudcroft Brewing Co is a must! Outdoor patio is fab. Try the Zia Pie - a thin artisan pizza with green chile and chorizo.

  • In the area:

    • White Sands National Park - If you do only ONE thing, make it this. You can rent sleds and borrow wax (to make sleds faster) from the Boothill RV front desk. Scope out your favorite hill and watch the wear themselves out sledding and climbing… over and over.

    • Pistachio Land - I mean - who would pass up the world’s largest pistachio? We sure didn’t. It also happens to be right across the street from Boothill RV. The website is less than impressive, but this pistachio farm includes a very impressive selection of any flavored pistachio (insert food product here), an ice cream shop, wine tasting, and farm tours. You can kill a max of 2 hours here.

SHOULD I HAVE KNOWN:

  • Want some cool family photos? Be in White Sands National Park at dusk.

  • While you can’t dry camp overnight at White Sands, you CAN take the RV for the day. Had we planned ahead, this would have made the day much more enjoyable. A retreat from the heat (sun radiates off sand and makes 70 degrees feel like 90), a place to prepare food out of the wind (and picnic tables are often taken), and a clean bathroom.

  • Internet is not the best at the RV park. With zoom meetings and online school, our family found ourselves spending many hours at Buffalo Wild Wings down the street. Amazing wifi, and I didn’t have to cook!

  • Fill up your tank BEFORE leaving town. The porta-potties on the stretch between Alamogordo and Los Cruces should have been a tell tale sign that a gas station would be a mirage. Read about our unfortunately funny mishap here.
